Exacerbation of neurotoxic effects of psychoactive substances at hyperthermic conditions

The use of stimulant psychoactive substances is often accompanied by hyperthermia, which can be life-threatening. In the present in vitro study, Zwartsen et al. show that the potency of psychoactive substances to alter neuronal activity is exacerbated ~2-fold under hyperthermic conditions compared to physiological temperatures. Considering the frequent occurrence of hyperthermia, the worsening of neurotoxic effects at elevated body temperatures should be included in future hazard assessment of psychoactive substances (Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology).
