Cardiotoxicity screening of illicit drugs and new psychoactive substances using MEA recordings


Zwartsen et al. investigated the effects of six recreational drugs on cardiomyocyte function using human-induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived cardiomyocytes cultured on multi-well microelectrode arrays (MEAs). All recreational drugs decreased the spike amplitude, decreased the beat rate, and increased the field potential duration. Importantly, MDMA, MDPV and amphetamine already affected cardiomyocyte function at concentrations relevant for human exposure (J Mol Cell Cardiol).
